Have a Digital Camera Field Trip in Preschool

Yesterday, I mentioned using your digital camera as an alternative to taking a field trip outside the classroom. Today, I had an opportunity to create a neighborhood field trip using my digital camera. I took the photos and I'm considering turning them into a book to put in our library. This would be the perfect addition to the unit on "Community" we do at the beginning of the school year. I've added some ideas and questions I might want to ask.

What is this sign? Can you see a number? What does it make you think of?
Have you ever been to a 7-11? What was your reason for going?

Have you been here before? Some friends go here when they are sick.
Some friends go here when they need shots to keep them well.
What can you tell me about your visit here?

What do you think this place is for? Why?

Do you remember passing one of these? What is it?
What does the red and white striped pole remind you of?

This is a place where people might sit and wait.
What might they be waiting for? How do you know?
What else could you do while you're waiting?

I chose most of these familiar places because of the location of the center. Most of my students live near or in the area and would have been to or at least seen these places before.

I look forward to hearing about your alternative to field trips.
Your Friend,

  1. I really like this idea! I am fortunate to be within walking distance to several parks, a waterpark, a library and restaurants so we do get to go places regularly. When I wasn't in such a good location I relied more on visitors coming to us - police, paramedic, nurse, musician, storyteller. We also went on a couple of pretend field trips.
I like your picture ideas. I would love to have pictures of all the local places to share with my buddies!

    1. Actually, this particular Center is in a part of town that's just not safe to have nature walks or any outside field trips:( So of course I also rely on the field trips that come to us. And here's something else you might like...a virtual field trip. See Ms. Penny and her field trips here
      Thanks for stopping by:)

  2. What a great idea! We have super-sized photos of our local community mounted on the wall near our entrance. Tis is a wonderful twist on that idea and can be used all the time. Thanks for sharing.
    Greg :)

    1. You're quite welcome...I haven't gotten a visit from you in a while, so glad you stopped by:)

  3. I love this idea!!! We don't get to do a lot of field trips so this is a great alternative. Thanks for sharing! :)

  4. You're more than welcome! I love sharing...Did you see my other comment to The Day Care Lady? I frequently visit KidVision for virtual field trips with my class.
    Thanks for stopping by:)
